Personalized Skin Care from the Experts at North York Dermatology

At North York Dermatology, we’re proud to offer leading-edge medical and cosmetic dermatology treatments—delivered by a warm, experienced team of physicians and skin care professionals who are here to help you feel your best in your own skin.

Skin conditions like moles and skin tags can sometimes affect how you feel about your appearance, and in certain cases, may even signal something more serious—like melanoma or other forms of skin cancer. That’s why we provide expert evaluations and treatment options that protect your health while helping you look and feel more confident.

Mole Evaluation

Moles are incredibly common and can appear just about anywhere on the body. Some are present from birth, while others show up during childhood or young adulthood. They can be flat or raised, and some even have hairs growing out of them. While most moles are completely harmless, it’s not unusual to feel self-conscious—especially if they’re in a visible area like your face or neck.

That said, some moles can be cause for concern. If a mole starts to change in size or shape, becomes asymmetrical, or appears later in life, it’s a good idea to get it checked out. These changes could indicate something more serious and may require a skin biopsy to rule out any cancerous cells.

During your visit, one of our dermatologists will take a close look at the mole using a tool called a dermatoscope, which helps us spot any irregularities. If the mole appears suspicious, we may recommend a biopsy. If it’s found to be benign, and you’d like it removed for cosmetic reasons, we offer several safe and effective options.

How We Remove Moles

Shave Excision

A common method for removing benign moles is shave excision, where a surgical blade is used to carefully remove the mole from the surface of the skin. With the right technique and care, the area typically heals beautifully—with little to no scarring.

Deeper Surgical Excision

For moles that go deeper into the skin, your dermatologist may recommend a more extensive removal that includes stitches to close the area. We’ll talk you through the process and make sure you’re comfortable every step of the way.

Laser-Like Precision Ablation

For certain types of lesions, we use a high-precision, energy-based device to gently break down the surface cells. It’s a minimally invasive treatment with a quick recovery time—and when done with skill and care, it leaves behind little to no scarring. Consulting with a dermatologist is essential to ensure that this treatment modality is appropriate.

Skin Tag Removal

Skin tags are small, soft growths that commonly appear in areas where skin rubs against skin or clothing—like the neck, underarms, or groin. They’re totally harmless, but we know they can be annoying or make you feel self-conscious. Some can even become irritated by jewelry or friction.

Even though you might see DIY skin tag remedies online, the safest way to remove them is to have it done by a medical professional. At North York Dermatology, we offer several simple and effective removal options:

Surgical Excision

We’ll numb the area, remove the skin tag using a sterile scalpel or scissors, and apply a small dressing to let it heal naturally. You’ll get clear aftercare instructions to keep the area clean and irritation-free.

Electrosurgery

This method uses a small electric current to remove the skin tag while simultaneously sealing the skin. It’s a quick procedure with minimal healing time and very little risk of scarring.

Cosmetic Cryotherapy

With this technique, we apply liquid nitrogen to freeze off the skin tag. There’s no downtime, but it can take a week or two for the tag to fall off completely.
